The Chemistry laboratory
at Clarence High School is one of the best among the schools in
Bangalore. It is a large room with many windows opening out into
the playground. This coupled with the exhaust fans ensures that
the different gases that may be given off during the experiments
do not affect the students working inside.
The laboratory is occupied
by four large tables, which have the Bunsen burners and the shelves
containing the necessary reagents. There are sinks placed at different
places and these are easily accessible to all students. The good
utilization of the space sees that many students can be carefully
accommodated in the laboratory.
Connected to the laboratory
is a demonstration room complete with desks, chairs, a Bunsen burner
and a blackboard. This room is used by the teachers to demonstrate
and brief students about experiments before they start their experiments.
The room is beautifully decorated with portraits of great scientists
who have contributed invaluably to the subject of Chemistry.
The laboratory has
a small enclosure where chemicals are stored and many cupboards
all over to store the apparatus used by the students.
The gas cylinder that
supplies to the laboratory’s Bunsen burner is kept outside to room
as a precaution against accidents. However incase some accident
takes place; a fire extinguisher is kept on the premises.
An attendant is always
present who helps the students in gathering their apparatus.
All these excellent
facilities help the students to practically and successfully carry
out the experiments, which they learn about. Thus increasing their
interest in the subject while instilling in them the joy of learning.
The Times magazine in it’s March 1999 issue described
the coming century as the ‘Century of Biotechnology and Biological
applications’. Keeping in mind the growing importance of Biology
in the world of Science, CLARENCE HIGH SCHOOL offers it’s students,
one of the best Biology Laboratories in Bangalore, to inculcate
in its youth the zeal to know more about the Science of Life.
To cater to the needs
of the ICSE and ISC students the laboratory is well stocked with
bottled specimens ranging from human fetuses to tapeworms, models
of various organ systems, laminated charts and other visual aids
to enable students to understand biological concepts more clearly.
Specimens of butterflies, nests, bird’s eggs and an aquarium add
to the beauty of the laboratory, while , the human skeleton provides
a strong backbone to higher zoological studies.
"Under the guidance
of the school's Biology teachers students are encouraged to observe
the microcosm through slide preparations". The laboratory is
also equipped with permanent slides of a variety of organisms, tissues
and cell processes which help students appreciate the structural
and functional complexities of life.
The laboratory with
it’s good lighting and workspace facilities also gives the students
a chance to carry out various physiological experiments in a scientific
manner. The laboratory is also furnished to allow students, particularly
those of the ISC to attend their theory classes at the same location
thereby providing flexibility in schedule.
To top it all, the
panoramic view the laboratory is blessed with, by virtue of it’s
location on the second floor of the William Carey Block, provides
the one percent inspiration that Edison once talked about !
Our physics laboratory
is a modern one and well equipped to cater to the requirements of
classes 7 and above as well as for the specific requirements of
the ICSE and ISC courses. The ISC public examinations in physics
practicals have been held in our lab ever since the inception of
the ISC course in our school a few years back.
Apart from the strictly
academic requirements of public examinations, our lab also has quite
a few apparatus for demonstration purposes. These include wave motion
machine, working models of a generator, two-stroke engine and a
host of other models and kits for use by the lower classes. We also
possess the luxury of a dual beam oscilloscope, which comes in handy
for demonstrations to the students of Std 12 Electronics Elective
Our lab can accommodate up to about 50 students of Std 10 level
or about 40 students of Std 12 level at a time. However as the student
strength is increasing, we plan to expand the present capacity to
about 60 students of Std 10 level and about 50 students of Std 12
Our plans for the near future are as follows: -
- To introduce students of physics
to the utilities of the computer for processing data, drawing
- Also, with the availability of
much high quality online teaching helps like animations, visuals,
etc in physics and related subjects, the possibility of using
the internet as a tool for teaching in the lab is a distinct
possibility in the near future.
Ultimately we would like our physics lab to be the envy of other
schools and a model lab which others may like to emulate.
The Computer Laboratory
is well equiped with state of the art computer systems. The senior
laboratory consisting of Eighteen high end processors
The Computer Laboratory
is well equipped with state of the art computer systems. The 45
systems are situated in two laboratories. Lab - 1 has 25 systems
and Lab - 2 has 20 systems.
The school has two
streams of computer students. The students who have chosen Computer
Science as their 6th Subject from Standard 8 upwards and those who
have chosen Computer Science as their elective in the I.S.C use
the lab. In addition all the students from Standards 4 to 10 have
computer general awareness classes in which they learn various programs
in MS - Office 2000, Pagemaker and MS Publisher.
In the last academic
year the school has also added an Edunet system and a CD Mirror
server which further enhances the technology used in computer education.
The Coates library
of Clarence High School has about 9000 books. It is reputed to be
one of the best and most – equipped libraries in the city. Students
from standards 3 to 12 use the library regularly.
The library has
- The reference section – for all
- Magazine section – for all students
who enjoy current topics.
- Senior lending library – Stds.
8, 9, 10, 11 & 12.
- Junior lending library – Stds.
5, 6 & 7
- Primary borrowing section – for
std 3 & 4.
- ISC section – for std. 11 &
As we have photocopying
facilities, students make full use of the Reference Sections from
which material is used for their projects and assignments.
The library is open
to all students and staff before morning assembly, short break and
the importance of fitness and exercise, our school places a high
premium on the Physical Education Department. The highlights of
the year are the KG and Senior Sports days, which are the culmination
of many months' preparation and hard work.
from Sports Days, there are compulsory games for Standards 7 to
12 after school hours. Each student chooses a game from cricket,
football, basketball, throwball and athletics and practise once
a week, thus stimulating and honing athletic abilities and prowess.
running takes the forefront in our Annual Road Race. The boys run
a course of 3 kms and the girls 2 kms.
November every year and we host an Inter-School basketball tournament
which sees the clash of many titans of basketball. The more athletically
inclined, avail of a summer coaching camp for athletics, basketball
"And finally, throughout the year, our PT masters
